Before coming to LearningQuest, Fernando Gutierrez had completed the 11th grade but faced significant personal challenges. He struggled with substance use and was caught by a school police officer for marijuana possession, which ultimately led to his expulsion. Concerned for his well-being, his mother placed him in a six-month recovery home.
Throughout his life, Fernando faced hardships that made finishing school difficult. After a relationship ended, he quickly entered another that also ended abruptly. During this time, he began drinking heavily, often consuming bottles of vodka, and his mother would sometimes find him unresponsive. Additionally, his brother, who struggled with meth addiction, introduced him to meth, further complicating his path. When his mother discovered his drug use, she tried to help him stay on track but eventually had to ask him to leave.
Fernando’s journey to LearningQuest began through the guidance of his Gospel Mission chaplain, Eric Filix, and a former student, Rogelio Guerrero, who referred him to the program. He quickly found support and encouragement from the teachers and tutors at LearningQuest. Although he initially disliked the panel interviews, he came to appreciate them, as they helped him build confidence speaking in front of multiple people and prepared him for future challenges.
Math proved to be his greatest academic obstacle, particularly geometry and concepts like radius. Determined to improve, he put in extra effort by attending tutoring sessions, watching YouTube videos, and completing practice tests. Despite personal struggles, he found strength in a safe and supportive environment, including the Gospel Mission community, which helped him stay focused on his goals.
After three months of hard work, beginning with his first test in reading in August, Fernando proudly earned his HiSET diploma. His next goal is to explore college opportunities, potentially in science or social studies, while continuing to work at the Gospel Mission.
Fernando encourages future students to never give up, believe in themselves, practice consistently, ask for help, and review their material. He also expresses deep gratitude to the staff, volunteers, and donors, especially Miss Daisy, for their time, support, and dedication, noting that their encouragement made his success possible.
